Who We Are

Thanadoula/Death Doula/Community Death Care/Life Cycle Celebrant/Home Funerals/Seminars - Debbie Seddon-Laninga

At Brigid's Balm we are focused on providing spiritual and emotional support for individuals and their families with regard to end of life care.

Assisting individuals during their transition from life through death is a very sacred time. We provide a variety of services to help families and individuals to experience the comfort of being supported, both while dealing with end of life care and after. Should there be services necessary that we are not able to provide we will be glad to assist you in contacting the appropriate agencies.  Debbie is NOT a nurse or a PSW and is not qualified to dispense medications.

Companioning, legacy work, compassionate end-of-life care provided in your home. Rates are $35.00 per hour, and when visiting those outside of the Smiths Falls area there is an additional charge of $35.00 to cover travel expenses. Also available to give seminars, rates to be discussed but generally $10.00 per person (plus expenses should there be handouts). Workshops are also available on various subjects such as our Grieving Through Art series. The cost for each workshop depends upon supplies required.

As a Life Cycle Celebrant and Spiritual Counselor I am able to perform a variety of rituals such as deathbed rituals, celebrations of life, home funerals (for people and pets), memorials, ceremonies of adoption (for people and pets), baby naming ceremonies, celebrations of commitment or renewal of vows (NOT Canadian weddings), home blessings and handfastings. My services are available for those of any or no faith, and I also support the LGBQT community.  I believe ritual to be an important aspect of our lives, bringing family and community closer together both in times of celebration and of shared mourning.

The initial half hour consultation is free, and services following will be invoiced in accordance to services provided. Please feel free to contact us to set up a consultation appointment in our office or in your home.

I am an Advanced Care Planning Facilitator. This work is usually set up as a workshop within the community, but personal consultations are also available. Please watch our "Events" page for future dates, or contact us should you request our services. Should you wish to book an Advanced Care Planning seminar or workshop for your group, please contact me at

Set up within my new office setting, these will be held at The Soul Space, 207 Brockville Street in Smiths Falls on the third Tuesday of every month from 6-8:00 beginning in March 2020. A Death Cafe is not a bunch of "goths" sitting around a table wearing black and talking about death - but it could be!!! This is a place to gather, eat cake, drink coffee and tea and discuss aspects of death or dying or expectations or experiences, everyone is welcome to join the discussion. Please watch our "Events" page for further details, soon to be hosted on a monthly basis.

Visit or subscribe to our page Make a Die of It - With Thanadoula Debbie. Just in its beginning stages, this is another way to bring our message to the public. Short videos answering questions about the work we do, recordings of seminars, and later workshops will be available for download. Feel free to email us with questions or topics you would like to see covered in the future.

This ten part series allows us to safely approach our grief experience without the need for verbalization. An ongoing series, participants may choose to attend one (or more) workshops at the cost of $36.00, or pre-purchase the series of ten for $300.00. Pre-registration is required for these two-hour events, involving topic discussion, mindfulness meditation and creative artwork. Booklet, supplies and projects go home with participants after each workshop. See our Events page for further details, or feel free to call or email Brigid's Balm Thanadoula Services.

Taking place from February through July 2020, this is a 72 hour in-class course (with additional reading lists and homework assignments). Space is limited as class size will remain small in order to preserve intimacy in learning and fully understanding the work we perform when dealing with clients and their families at end of life. Please email Brigid's Balm for further information.
